Join the Build A House … Build A Dream Contest!
The contest challenges fifth grade students (individually or as a small team) to build three dimensional, model “dream homes”, and present their homes to our judges at the event. Participating students’ imaginative, colorful designs reflect their far ranging interests and the issues that concern them. Adults involved learn a lot from these impressive kids too!
Both students and teachers have found it a fun way to learn and teach various topics, such as:
Social and Environmental Studies—Finding the inspiration for their design creates research opportunities into current events, environmentally friendly building, their own heritage, and other cultures.
Math—Building a proportionate home within the size restrictions helps students practice their math skills through measurement, conversion, and basic addition and subtraction. It also demonstrates the need for these skills in daily life!
Writing and Presentation Skills—Composing a short essay describing their home and making a brief oral presentation of their home to our volunteer judges helps students practice their communication skills.
Habitat for Humanity, the Affiliates of the Delaware Valley’s Tenth Annual Build A House … Build A Dream Contest for Kids will be held at:
Immaculata University on Saturday, March 10,2012.
